Huawei: a tech giant that never sleeps

It was once considered an insignificant startup bound for failure. Huawei, a Chinese company – born and bred in Shenzhen – has proved others wrong and rose to become a global leader in telecommunication, and a serious contender for the big tech giants. It all started with a modest investment of 5,600 USD. Huawei has beaten all odds, and surpassed many local companies to grow into a giant tech empire, with a total revenue that reached 75.1 Billion USD in 2016. Today, Huawei serves one third of the world’s population and has a commercial footprint in 170 countries and regions; it is also the first Chinese company to ship more than 100 million smartphones. This is the story of the upward trajectory of this company that never rests on its laurels.

Humble beginnings
In 1987, Ren Zhengfei, a Chinese technical veteran, raised 21,000 RMB (approximately 5,600 USD) and founded Huawei Technology Limited Company with only 3 staff, hoping to build a Chinese telecommunication that could compete with foreign competitors. In 1990, the company began to invest in research with 500 R&D staff and to develop small and medium telecom equipment targeting small enterprises. Huawei started to gain market share as it deployed in rural markets where it cut its teeth to design and customize equipment that meet customers’ needs. As it become the undisputed number one smartphone brand in China, Huawei set sights on overseas market; during 2002 and 2003, the company contracted with IBM, Accenture and other companies while increasing its investment in R&D and establishing a talent pool to be able to tap into the challenging overseas markets. As of 2011, as it advanced rapidly into new markets and established itself as a global ICT solutions provider, Huawei committed to creating a smart society with a device network cloud structure, and acting as an enabler and facilitator in the process of intelligent social development. Huawei grew aggressively into new markets with a focus on Europe, where it became the number two Android phone. Globally, the company grew at an unprecedented clip to become the world’s number three smartphone company, with 11.3 percent market share in Q2 2017 according to IDC.

On the 25th Sep 2017, Huawei had ranked 70th in Interbrand’s best global brands. In 2016, it ranked number 49 on Brandz’s Top 100 of the world’s most valuable brands with a brand value of 20.388 billion USD, 40 on Brand Finance’s list of the world’s most valuable brands with a brand value of 25.23 billion USD and 88 on Forbes list of the world’s most valuable brands with a value of 7.3 billion USD; Huawei was the only Chinese company to make this list.

The secret formula to success

+
Unlike other companies, Huawei is owned by its employees who take pride in its successes. Driven by a commitment to sound operations, ongoing innovation, and open collaboration, Huawei established a competitive ICT portfolio of end-to-end solutions in telecom and enterprise networks, devices, and cloud technology and services. Huawei advocates openness, collaboration, and shared success, and has joined forces with industry partners to innovate and bring technology to consumers. Committed to the core values of staying customer-centric, inspiring dedication, persevering, and growing by self-reflection, Huawei amassed long-term, focused effort that leads to great moments of technological breakthroughs. Huawei also values R&D investment, technology and innovation. In the last 10 years, the company invested 45 billion USD in R&D to bring the latest technology to its products and services. To date, the company has established 15 R&D institutes/centers and 36 joint innovation centers around the world, mainly in Europe, including Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, and the UK. Huawei also ranked as the world’s eighth-largest company in terms of research and development spending in 2016, according to EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. Anchor

A giant that never sleeps, Huawei has climbed to the top to become an increasingly powerful global player capable of going head-to-head with the best.

Huawei challenges Apple’s Siri with Mobile AI

There was chatter around AI a couple of years ago, triggered by Apple’s voice assistant, Siri. And while voice assistants have retreated into the background, artificial intelligence has kept hold of people’s imaginations and remains a key trend in technology.
Early in 2016, Huawei predicted the coming era of AI and proposed the concept of the superphone, implementing a strategy to coordinate AI developmentin terms of device, cloud and chip. In 2017, Huawei continued their efforts to develop an AI chip, aiming to seize the initiative before its competition.
Unsurprisingly, AI development is a priority for many leading organizations and the AI battle is about to commence. According to insider information, Apple is secretly developing an AI chip, which is rumored to be capable of improving its hardware system. Besides boosting the performance of Apple's consumer level products such as the iPhone and iPad, it will also improve Siri’s capabilities, and will be applied to forward-looking programs like Apple’s autonomous driving system.
Besides Apple, another American tech giant, Microsoft, is also expected to get involved in the AI chip, which is likely to bring more uncertainties to the battle. With itsbrand new mobile AI chip and Mobile AI strategy, Huawei is primedto enter the battlefield, and hopefully become a key player in this domain.

The reason behind Huawei’s investment in AI is self-evident. Currently, in domains such as the smartphone, products are homogenized while market competition is getting more and more intense. AI is very much an opportunity for phone makers to survive and thrive, making it a vital battleground. While Apple and Samsung don't have a clearly defined AI strategy in place, both of them have increased their investment in AI-related R&D activities. The Chinese tech giant Huawei, on the other hand, has announced its own AI chip plan. AI hasbecome a platform for the phone makers to create differentiated value.
Driven by the trend, winning AI is winning the future. Apple has always been working to offer highly integrated and smart products, but they are also being criticized for not being innovative enough, which could be a result of the absence of a clearly defined AI strategy. Huawei, quite different from Apple, continually invests in developing its own chips to compete with Qualcomm and Apple. The performance of its mobile chips is no longer a concern as Huawei’s capabilities in research and development are proven. And the upcoming AI chip will be something to look forward to.

Huawei AI Chip Ushers in the AI Age? The High-Tech Titans Scheme AI in This Way

AI is undoubtedly at the forefront of the age. The major high-tech titans around the globe are scheming how to fully tap AI and accumulate key technologies to keep themselves invincible and competitive in the vigorous AI application era. It's yet to determine who will play the leading role in AI, but the layout of each giant is increasingly clearer, so do their strengths.

According to IDC, by 2020, the market share of AI will grow from 8 billion dollars to 47 billion dollars. It is possibly the huge market potential that drives those industry tycoons to carry out armament race in AI. Let's see how the competitors scheme their markets when Huawei is about to launch its AI chip.

Overseas Competitors: Google, Amazon and Apple
According to Tencent Research Institute, the AI development in the US is 5 years' more advanced than China. The US is leading the AI industry in all respects covering basic level, technology level and application level and has accumulated powerful strength of technological innovation, especially in the core areas like algorithm, chip and data. Now all of the five major powers——Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook are investing numerous resources to grab AI market or transfer themselves into AI-driven companies.

Taking Google——the most advanced player as an example, the accomplishment of Google AI is not limited to AlphaGo which has gained considerable fame and is flourishing in more areas. According to its released data, Google has applied AI in consumables like Google Unmanned Vehicle and Google Home, launched Voice Intelligence API and Google Cloud as solution tools and rolled out the bespoke TPU, Cloud TPU and quantum computer.

In addition to Google, Amazon introduced the world famous smart loudspeaker Echo, Alexa voice assistant, the smart supermarket Amazon go unmanned aerial vehicle PrimeAir and other consumables. Apple also has its consumption products including Siri and iOS photo management. In the meanwhile, Microsoft and Facebook are advancing rapidly side by side in AI.
Domestically, technical companies in China are developing vigorously and China is keeping a high growth rate in terms of AI publication numbers and patent numbers, which brings China into the first-tier member in AI industry. However, the US place more emphasis on basic research and personnel cultivation which is an obvious advantage compared with China. In the future, both countries will face more head-on competitions in AI industry and it's pending to see if China is able to surpass the US in the ten years to come.

Domestic Competitors: The Three Internet Giants BAT, and Huawei——the Innovation Foregoer
BAT--China's three internet champions are taking AI as key strategy and actively mapping AI industry by giving full play to their roles with their own advantages, displaying robust aspiration for AI application.

Tencent AI products include WeChat AI, Dreamwriter, AI product "Jueyi"Go, TiantianPtu, while Baidu has launched Baidushitu, Baidu unmanned vehicle and Duer. Alibaba has rolls out smart loudspeaker TianmaojinglingX1 and smart customer service "alixiaomi",etc.

BAT's capability in AI goes far beyond its great influence on internet. In technology, these industry giants speed up their key technology R&D by recruiting high-end talents and building labs. In the meantime, they perfect their layout via continuously acquiring startups to absorb AI talents. What's more, these key players are committed to establishing AI ecosystem to empower the whole industry through developing technological platforms.

With years of experiences in exploring telecommunication and terminal application, Huawei carries a more in-depth layout in AI. According to overseas media, Huawei is about to issue AI chip used in smart phones with a view of dominating the high ground. The so-called AI chip is the Kirin-series chip to be launched at IFA. It is said that the all-new Kirin chip is featured by both an elevated performance and new chip solutions. The AI concept created by Huawei unveils that AI is not limited to voice assistant, but also hints that AI's application in mobile terminal has new breakthrough.

Given the technology barriers, long investment cycle as well as limited market size, the threshold of AI chip manufacturing is pretty high. However, as the core of industry, AI chip has the highest technology demand and added value, whose industry value and strategic standing are much higher than innovative application level. It's rare and commendable for Huawei to specialize in AI and successfully complete R&D and put AI into practice.
