Pak-Qatar Family Takaful shows a whopping 28% surplus for 2015


Pak-Qatar Family Takaful Limited (PQFTL) has announced the distribution of 28% surplus among its Individual Family Takaful participants (Direct Business) for the year 2015, consecutively for the eighth year. This Surplus reflects the institution’s competitive financial performance during the year 2015.
The Single-rate method has been adopted to calculate the Surplus, and will be distributed amongst the participants, through a defined manner in relation to the “Cumulative Net Contribution” received in the IFTPF (Individual Family Takaful Participant Fund) by each participant.
Furthermore, the actual surplus will only be distributed among those participants, who will be   leaving the pool during the year 2016, and will be making permanent withdrawals, in case of maturity of their membership or their death.
After this important announcement of Surplus declaration, Pak-Qatar Family Takaful Limited will now become the only Family Takaful Operator in the country, which has been consistently declaring distributable Surplus for Individual Family Takaful, every year, over the past eight years of its operations. Samsung Electronics Wins 29 awards, including Creative Marketer of the Year, at Cannes Lions 2016


Samsung Electronics won 29 awards, including “Creative Marketer of the Year,” at the recent Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Siemens technology controls world’s first 3D-printed office building in Dubai


The world’s first 3D-printed office building has been inaugurated in Dubai, using smart technology from Siemens to integrate the building management systems, access control and surveillance into a central building management platform.

“This is a globally significant project – the first of its kind – and our contribution is the very latest in intelligent building automation and control,” said Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO, Siemens Middle East. “Increasingly intelligent, digitalized infrastructure is paving the way for a more sustainable future in the UAE, and we are proud to be supporting Dubai’s smart-city strategy, and the country’s national vision 2021, by showcasing our technology in this landmark project.”

The 250-square-meter ‘Office of the Future’ was constructed using a 3D printer measuring 20 feet high, 120 feet long and 40 feet wide, and built on the site of Emirates Towers in Dubai.

Integrating key components of the ‘Office of the Future’ is a unique Building Management Platform from Siemens, Desigo CC, enabling the control and optimization of the building’s technical infrastructure, surveillance, air conditioning, access control and safety technology from a single location. A customized platform displays the status of these different systems in real time, enabling operators to accurately monitor and control the building’s performance.

The ‘Office of the Future’ concept also uses a Siemens video surveillance system with high-definition cameras and web-enabled access via apps and web clients, and an access control system based on biometrics and smart cards.

Siemens has also supplied smart fire protection with technology for detection, alarm signaling and control, using multi-criteria detectors which can adapt to changing environments, analyze signals for false alarms and protect against hazards such as the presence of carbon monoxide. The system can also be analyzed, evaluated and diagnosed remotely for more efficient maintenance.

“Integrating key functions with an intelligent building management system has clear safety, cost and efficiency benefits, and at the moment only Siemens is able to combine the management of all building disciplines in one integration platform,” said Koen Bogers, Senior Executive Vice President, Building Technologies, Siemens Middle East. “Desigo CC gives building operators a precise overview of their assets, allowing them to be managed more efficiently and transparently while enabling flexible usage and energy conservation.”


The Desigo CC Building Management Platform is also able to accommodate a wider range of building systems including heating, ventilation and air conditioning, power, lighting and shading, and components can be added when requirements change. Global installations of Desigo CC have realized reductions in building operating costs of up to 20 percent.

Carmudi Predicts Rise in the Number of Standard Safety Features in Locally Produced Cars


Carmudi.pk, leading online vehicle marketplace and automobile classified portal, predicts a shift towards integration of more safety features in locally produced passenger cars. According to Carmudi Pakistan, this shift may be gradual but there will be more cars equipped with active safety features –as per international standards- in Pakistan in the coming years.

One of the major factors to facilitate this rise will be the growing number of imported cars, an online survey by Carmudi suggests. Newly approved auto-policy, lowered fuel prices, and low interest rates have contributed to a hike in the number of used imported cars. Reports suggest that the import of used cars in the first four months of this year was almost double as compared to the same period last year. Internationally assembled cars usually have more standard safety features as compared to locally produced cars, for more or less the same cost. This, in effect, will create stiff competition for Pakistani car assemblers, compelling them to improve locally produced models. Additionally, increase in public awareness regarding road safety measurements also indicates growth in purchase of safer cars in the future.

As of now, seat belts on driver and passenger seats are a standard feature in every domestically produced car, whereas other features such as airbags, fog lamps, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) vary from one company and model to another. Market survey shows that Honda (Pakistan) has the most number of locally assembled cars that are equipped with the aforementioned features, other companies have select models integrated with more than one of these features. For example, Swift (Pak Suzuki) is the only model by the company to offer anti-lock braking system as a standard feature.

Recently, Honda launched its tenth generation Civic X in Pakistan along with other countries. Both the debuted models, namely 1.8L Oriel and 1.5L Turbocharged, are reported to have been equipped with Auto Brake Hold (ABH), Vehicle Stability Assistance (VSA), and Hill Start Assistance (HSA) as standard active safety features. Other than these there is a range of optional features as well that will be available for extra cost.

Huawei Performed Well In The First Quarter of 2016


Huawei has proven to be the real time technology champion in the last year with remarkable growth across the borders and similar pace has been shown in the Q1 of the 2016. According to the reports of technology analysts, 2016 has been started as a spectacular year for Huawei that can be better described with a huge success in the first quarter. Last year, Huawei was the only technology giant in the smart phone market to witness a gigantic growth of 44% in the smart phones shipment. It is further expected to increase business by 20% in this year as well. Interestingly, other competitors in the smart phone technology world are facing difficult times, and even one of these has been downsizing its devices units for over the past 12-18 months.

Huawei Technologies is tremendously capturing the market and poses a threat to the other technology manufacturers. In 2016, the anticipated smart phone shipment is 120 million units as compared to more or less 108 million units last year. It can be noted that in 2013 the smart phone shipment growth for Huawei was 75 million units. Clear growth patterns like these are indeed appreciable. In the light of the growth trajectory Huawei has announced to hit the global revenue of US $ 100 billion within next 5 years. However, only for the market of Pakistan targets are set to achieve 1-2 billion US dollars within the time period of 2-3 years.

These targets are quite incompliance with the progress graphs Huawei has marked over the years. One may say that still Huawei has not matched the shipment volumes of Samsung and Apple in the market, as 320 million units were shipped by Samsung alone in the past year. But important is the fact that Samsung is consistently experiencing reduction in the shipment and subsequently the net profits. According to the most recent press release of Samsung from Seoul, the company has witnessed 40% cut in the net profit during the 4th quarter of last year. Also company has admitted that reduced smart phone demand and tough competition by the competitors in the market were the grounds for this.

Other than Samsung, Apple has also faced the changing market scenario and could only shipped 74.8 million smart phones in the last quarter of 2015. Solar PV Project Financing for Industries


Industrial users of electricity today are open to PV solutions to reduce their day to day to expenses and their impact on climate, but project financing is one of the bigger challenges that yet needs to be addressed.

Forms of solar project financing such as third party Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and Solar Leases have gained massive approval in United States and other developed nations. Under a PPA, an installer builds a solar system at the client’s property at zero-upfront cost. The system offsets the customer’s electric utility bill, and the developer sells the power generated to the client at an agreed upon tariff rate that is typically lower than rates of the local utility at no additional responsibility; whereas solar leases allow the user to lease the plant at predetermined rates with zero or low initial costs. Both of these models enable the customer to support solar power and avoid costs arising from operations and maintenance that are generally transferred to the developer.

It is needed that banks and other local and international lending institutions provide adequate support to these project developers to offer better financing options to the industrial user.

“With rapidly developing technology, and falling panel costs, it is essential that the Government provides financial provisions to encourage solar installations for businesses and households alike. We are currently in talks with a couple of banks that have shown interest in financing solar power projects. Payments plans for borrowers, connection to grid in case of net-metering and other technicalities should be addressed on priority to meet the country’s energy needs,” said Inam ur Rahman, CEO, Reon Energy Limited.


Ease in financing of solar power projects shall encourage robust investments in solar energy sector. With sun energy present in abundance in Pakistan, solar energy technologies shall help save on electricity bills for both businesses and households.

Food Photography Starts With Huawei P9 in Second Ashra of Ramazan

Huawei’s P9 and P9 Plus Smartphones, Strong Demand Leads to Significant Growth


Huawei Consumer Business Group today announced its newest flagship smartphones, the P9 and P9 Plus, have achieved unprecedented global sales since they were launched. Global shipments of the P9 and P9 Plus exceeded 2.6 million within six weeks of their release, with tremendous sales globally, including Pakistan.

During the first quarter of 2016, Huawei shipped 28.3 million units globally, a 64 percent increase year-over-year. The P9 has huge popularity globally, achieving tremendous pre-orders and sales. The P9 sales are 130 percent higher than P8 sales in global markets. Lighting up Lives with PepsiCo Pakistan

Avid CSR volunteers from PepsiCo Pakistan launched the 2016 Lighting Up Lives campaign in the holy month of Ramazan with commitment and dedication towards community betterment.


The ‘Lighting Up Lives’ project, launched in 2014, is PepsiCo Pakistan’s flagship CSR program which provides solar lights inside Pepsi bottles to communities in need. This initiative has helped install hundreds of lights in refugee camps and other under privileged areas across Pakistan impacting the lives of thousands of community members. PepsiCo aims to increase the project’s reach and light up hundreds of thousands of Pakistani lives in years to come.

This volunteering activity was arranged in collaboration with Buksh Foundation and Roshni Welfare Association. Volunteers from PepsiCo helped to install hundreds of lights at the Roshni village for special persons. The beneficiaries were thrilled with this ‘gift of light’ as they called it while also taking part in the installation of the lights activity.

The lighting solution provided is simple but sustainable. It comprises of a battery, solar panel and a Pepsi bottle with an LED light in it. The light automatically switches on as the sun sets.

The event was attended by the senior management of PepsiCo, Buksh Foundation and Roshni                 Welfare Association along with members of the media. Jahanzeb Khan, Vice President and General Manager PepsiCo Pakistan, hailed the volunteers’ passion towards community service and remarked on the occasion: “The spirit of social responsibility has always been an integral part of the way PepsiCo operates. We believe this support will help those fellow Pakistanis living in the dark to carry on with their lives and continue to earn their respective livelihood with this gift of light.”
