Sustainability reporting key to profitability and success, says new guide from ACCA

                                     


ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has today published a new guide entitled ‘Sustainability reporting – the guide to preparation’. It is published ahead of COP28, the UN climate summit starting on 30 November in the UAE, in which ACCA is participating. Driving forward sustainability reporting - and increasing its global adoption - will be among the topics discussed.

 

Aimed at professional accountants, senior management and talent developers, this guide sets out key steps to help organisations start to prepare for sustainability reporting. It includes an eight-stage reporting cycle and suggestions with examples. It can be adapted to organisations of various sizes. The guide focuses on preparing for sustainability reporting in accordance with the inaugural ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board) Standards, however it is equally relevant to organisations applying other sustainability reporting standards.

 

Businesses are facing increasing demands for sustainability information from customers, suppliers, lenders, potential new recruits and regulators.Those that interconnect sustainability and financial information are more equipped to make decisions that will lead to long-term success. They will have better access to finance, be better able to attract good quality staff, and will be more attractive to customers.They will also more likely to be compliant with the growing number of new sustainable business regulations and reporting requirements in this space.Businesses and professionals are asking for more support and guidance to prepare this information.

 

This first-in-a-series guide is complemented by a series of videos, produced in partnership with the ISSB. Intended to help understand and apply the standards, they focus on the first two standards: IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, which were published in June this year.

 

Report co-author Sharon Machado, head of sustainable business at ACCA said, ‘Achieving quality in sustainability reporting needn’t be a race; what’s important is having the courage to get started, the ability to apply judgement in the context of your organisation, getting others on board, and findings ways to improve.’

 

Report co-author Hsiao Mei Chow, head of corporate reporting insights – sustainability at ACCA, added: There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. We encourage all involved to take time to work through the suggested processes, then design processes appropriate to their organisation and implement them.’

 

Report co-author Aaron Saw, head of corporate reporting insights – financial at ACCA, commented: ‘Sustainability reporting is likely to cover a range of matters, but the emphasis should be on material information for the intended users. Determining material information about sustainability-related risks and opportunities for reporting requires a three-step approach.’


ACCA director of policy & insights, Mike Suffield said: ‘Sustainability reporting requirements extend to explaining the approach and progress made on sustainability-led strategies – for many professional accountants this is a big change. On the other hand, this more holistic reporting requirement supports achieving benefits over the short-, medium-, and longer-term.’

Global role for Pakistan finance leader

     



Ayla Majid elected deputy president of ACCA.A woman from Pakistan has been elected deputy president of the world’s leading professional accountancy body.

Ayla Majid, who is based in Islamabad, is now the second-highest ranked officer at ACCA, (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), which has more than three-quarters-of-a-million members and students in 191 countries.

 

Majid said: ‘I couldn’t be prouder. ‘I will do all in my power to carry on the aim of opening more and more doors to chances in life to more and more people everywhere. 

‘It is also very satisfying to take on this role as a Pakistani woman. It shows that women from emerging and developing world are ready to contribute and seize opportunities, not only at the national level but also on the global stage. Role of women in key governance positions is also extremely important for diversity and strength of organizations - something which truly global organizations have acknowledged and embraced.’

 

Majid was first elected to ACCA’s global governing Council in 2014. She has 22 years of experience in transaction advisory, mergers & acquisitions, and project development across energy and infrastructure. She has 14 years of board leadership experience including chairing boards as an independent director on boards in energy, pharmaceutical and not-for-profit sectors.

Majid has been a member of the Global Future Council of Energy Transition of the World Economic Forum and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

 

She is now CEO of Planetive, which she founded in 2020, a consulting and project development practice which promotes sustainable finance, decarbonization and energy transition, with organizations across the world, with particular focus in the Middle East and Pakistan.

The new president of ACCA is Ronnie Patton, a retired accountancy lecturer from Northern Ireland.

Standard Chartered Bank and the IFC enter a Risk-Participation Agreement

       


Standard Chartered Bank Pakistan has signed an un-funded Risk-Participation Agreement with the International Finance Corporation.  The USD 200 million PKR equivalent programme, will see the IFC cover 50% of Standard Chartered’s risk against short term-trade and working capital funded loan facilities for corporate clients based in Pakistan.

Standard Chartered and IFC aim to leverage their long-standing relationship with export-based industries in Pakistan to enable the generation of foreign exchange inflows which remain critical for the sustainable growth of Pakistan’s economy. These inflows will be made possible through the enhanced availability of trade and working capital loan facilities including supply chain financing and sustainable finance product suites for large-scale manufacturers. This programme is a key milestone of IFC and Standard Chartered’s global collaboration that can be replicated across emerging markets to facilitate trade flows.

CEO CBD PUNJAB SURPRISE VISIT PROPELS CBD PUNJAB PROJECTS TOWARD TIMELY COMPLETION

        


Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), commonly known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), witnessed a significant development as CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin, took a proactive approach to evaluate ongoing projects on a surprise visit this Sunday. The visit aimed to assess project progress in accordance with the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, Mohsin Raza Naqvi.

CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin, demonstrated his commitment to the timely completion of projects by inspecting various key sites. The surprise visit covered the Ghora Chowk Flyover, Lahore Prime CBD Punjab Quaid District, CBD Punjab Phase 2 and 3, as well as the Walton Road upgradation. 

Executive Director Technical CBD Punjab Riaz Hussain, Director Project Management CBD Punjab Asif Iqbal, Director Construction CBD Punjab Asif Babar, Director Architecture CBD Punjab Sameer Aftab, and officials from NESPAK and NLC were also present.

While expressing his views CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin said "Our dynamic approach ensures the timely completion of every project under CBD Punjab. We are committed to the development and progress of the region."

Executive Director Technical CBD Punjab Riaz Hussain provided a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing projects. Highlights of the progress include the completion of shuttering for the Ghora Chowk Flyover, the concrete completion of the bottom slab of the flyover, and the ongoing installation of geo grid for the MSE wall. Additionally, the sub-base for slip roads has been completed, and these roads are expected to be operational in the coming days.

Lahore Prime CBD Punjab Quaid District is currently undergoing hardscaping and landscaping.  The Walton Road upgradation is progressing rapidly to meet its targets.

The aim of the summit was to create awareness about the projects of CBD Punjab. Members from the  real estate and business community participated in the summit.  COO CBD Punjab, Brigadier (R) Mansoor Janjua,Executive Director Commercial CBD Punjab, Mohammed Omer, Executive Director Legal CBD Punjab, Barrister Bilal Afzal Khokhar, Director Marketing CBD Punjab, Waseem Siddiq, Director Operations CBD Punjab, Colonel (R) Fazeel Ghumman and other officials of CBD Punjab attended the event. CEO CBD PUNJAB REVIEWS ONGOING PROJECTS FOR TIMELY COMPLETION

                                             

Imran Amin CEO of Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), visited ongoing projects of the authority including Ghora Chowk Flyover and infrastructure development works at Lahore Prime, CBD Punjab Quaid District. The visit aimed to ensure the timely and efficient completion of the projects.

Speaking on the occasion, CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin, emphasized the importance of adhering to the directives of Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Naqvi, he further added that “completion of these projects will open new development avenues. We are modernizing Lahore’s infrastructure which will serve as a sound foundation for modern urbanization”.

Regarding the Ghora Chowk flyover, Imran Amin was briefed about the significant progress achieved, with the completion of retaining piles, pile caps, piers, abutment walls, and the ongoing steel fixing for span 1 and 5. Additionally, the water-bound and subbase of slip roads, geogrid of msc wall, and drainage work are currently in progress.

At Lahore Prime, CBD Punjab Quaid District, the technical team of CBD Punjab reported the completion of key milestones, including the asphalt of roads, drainage systems, and the establishment of electricity and water supply infrastructure. Furthermore, the landscaping and plantation phase has also been successfully accomplished, demonstrating substantial strides in the development of the area.

With the concerted efforts and support from the Punjab government, CBD Punjab remains committed to delivering these projects within the specified timelines, contributing significantly to the economic and infrastructural advancement of the province of Punjab.
